Carmel studied politics and international relations before moving into law because she saw it as a vehicle to bring about meaningful social change. She had quite a unique experience before being called to the bar, working as a Deputy Registrar of the NSW Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeal, as a Tipstaff and Judge’s Associate, and working at the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office.
Carmel approaches every matter with a strategic long-term view. She considers all the factors in play so she can chart a course that gets the best possible outcome for her clients, whether that occurs via litigation, alternative dispute resolution, or settlement. She enjoys being at the coalface of litigation and is willing to consider pro bono briefs in areas of significant public interest, such as human rights.
Carmel’s work list
Why I do what I do…
- Good arguments can progress the development of law in Australia, which makes it a very rewarding field.
- Law requires a balance between art and a science. It’s as much about persuasion as it is about precedent.
- The intellectual rigour of law is also something I enjoy. You have to think on your feet and rise to the challenge.
Carmel’s play list
When I’m not in court…
- Outside the office, I really like live music and live theatre, especially fringe theatre and arts festivals.
- Planning trips to remote windswept islands is always on my mind. I love the landscapes, history, and folklore.
- I’m also learning to sail. I’ve tried it a few times overseas and decided it was time to learn here on Sydney Harbour.
